Passing motorist rescues baby from fiery fatal crash

A PASSING motorist has pulled a 10-month-old girl from a fiery crash that killed her 21-year-old mother on the Cunningham Hwy.

The crash took place on the Cunningham Hwy at Aratula about 9.30pm yesterday.

It is understood the woman was turning into the driveway of her mother's house when a semi-trailer slammed into the rear of her car.

The motorist pulled the baby from the wreckage moments before it went up in flames.

The car, the truck and its trailer were incinerated. The mother died at the scene.

The baby was taken to the Mater Hospital for observation and the 38-year-old truck driver was taken to the Ipswich Hospital.

Police remain at the scene this morning and road closures south of Aratula are expected for some hours yet.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.
