Woman ran into path of semi-trailer

A 37-YEAR-OLD woman was flown to Brisbane in a critical condition after she was struck by a semi-trailer on the Bruce Highway south of Maryborough yesterday.

Police believe the woman ran across the road and into the path of the southbound vehicle at about 11.30am, after she was involved in an argument with her partner, who had stopped his car by the side of the highway.

Fraser Coast Crash Unit officer in charge Steve Webb said the woman had apparently fled from a nearby car after having argument with her partner.

"From what we understand, the woman has had an argument with her partner and tried to leave the vehicle while it was travelling at speed down the highway," Sgt Webb said.

"At this point her partner has slowed down and she has jumped out of the vehicle and run across the road.

"She has basically run straight into the oncoming traffic."

Sergeant Webb said the young semi-trailer driver had done an amazing job in stopping his vehicle so quickly.

"In these types of situations there isn't much time to really think," Sgt Webb said.

"But the young driver has done an excellent job in swerving to avoid the woman, but unfortunately she was still clipped by the vehicle.

"There was nothing more the driver could have done.

"She was unavoidable."

Ambulance officers treated the woman for life threatening injuries at the scene before taking her to Maryborough Base Hospital, where she was airlifted to Brisbane for further treatment.

The driver of the semi-trailer received minor injuries and was treated at the scene for facial cuts.

Traffic was backed up for several kilometres in both directions of the Bruce Highway, with several vehicles turning back to avoid the crash.
