Windsor v Joyce: things are getting nasty

THE fight over the New South Wales seat of New England got uglier yesterday with independent Tony Windsor calling in the lawyers over reports he bullied other students at school.

A report in The Australian yesterday quoted former schoolmates of Mr Windsor saying he had physically mistreated students while at a Tamworth high school in the 1960s.

Mr Windsor said he had referred the article to his "legal advisors" and would not be responding to "gutter journalism".

The former MP for New England is running against Nationals Leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce in an increasingly hostile local campaign.

Mr Windsor also hit out at Coalition-funded attack advertisements that depicted him as having cheated against the electorate by siding with Julia Gillard to form a minority government.
