'It was like a mini tornado or cyclone'
UPDATE: A ferocious storm has ripped through parts of the southern Tablelands.
The wild weather saw damaging winds, thunderstorms and rain pelt areas south of Atherton, southwest of Cairns yesterday afternoon.
Herberton recieved 37mm and Ravenshoe 15mm in the 24-hour period to 9am today.
More than 120 customers are without power in the Ravenshoe district.
Herberton Spy Camera Museum owner Michael Petersen said the storm was "really ferocious".
"It was like a mini-tornado or cyclone. It was really windy and there was a bit of lightning nd thunder too," he said.
Mr Petersen, who has lived in the town for the past 10 years, said he hasn't seen a storm like that before.
"It was strong and really quick," he said.
"The rainfall was like horizontal."

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast more thunderstorms in Herberton today with up to 20mm expected to fall.
A chance of a thunderstorm is also present for Cairns.
EARLIER: RESIDENTS on the Atherton Tablelands are being urged to brace for wild weather as storms rip through the area.
Strong winds causing damage to rooves and trees were reported this afternoon as well as hailstones.
Meteorologist James Thompson said several storms that have gone through the region, with Herberton recording 32mm of rainfall today and Malanda 33mm.
He said he was currently monitoring the storm come north, inland of Port Douglas.
"One (storm) earlier this afternoon went through Atherton itself and one through Ravenshoe," he said.
"We've had reports of some damage to rooves and trees down from strong winds and also some pictures of come hail about 2cm in size.
"We could see the storms continue into the evening and tomorrow as well there's a chance for more storms."
Mr Thompson said there was a chance or more storms on the Atherton Tablelands again tomorrow and easing off towards Friday.
"The chance tomorrow is slightly less, heading more inland to Georgetown and Richmond before clearing off by Friday," he said.
