Wild rose rides high

BASED on the name, it's no surprise the Wild Boys' set is pretty blokey.

There are guns, explosions, chases on horseback and plenty of bush bashing in the Channel Seven series set in an 1860s pioneer town in New South Wales.

But that didn't bother ones of the new show's two female leads, Anna Hutchison.

The New Zealand actor, best known in Australia for her bare-all role in Underbelly opposite Matthew Newton, says Wild Boys' stars Daniel MacPherson, Michael Dorman, David Field and her on-screen love interest Alex England were "such cool guys" to work with.

"Those boys, I find it very hard to do anything with them with a straight face," she said.

"They bring humour out of any situation and their chemistry translates on to the screen. They are having such a rad time that you have a good time watching them.

"Sometimes you'll be standing there - the only girl around eight guys - and they start saying these rude jokes. You're thinking 'I'm not going to join in' and then you think of something even ruder than what they're saying (laughs)."

And even though she plays the Hopetoun mayor's seemingly sweet and innocent daughter, Emilia Fife, Hutchison still gets to see some action, thanks to her relationship with farrier-turned-bushranger Conrad Fischer (England).

"Her father's never really said no to her. He's kind of brought up this really strong little girl, who he's quite fond of until the farrier she's seeing turns out to be a bushranger," she said.

"She's really fun to play. She doesn't hold back. In that time you imagine girls had to hold their tongues a wee bit but she's holding her own against these men."

Wild Boys is England's first major television role since graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts.

"You wouldn't know it was his first," said Hutchison.

"He's completely at ease with the whole thing; like he's been doing it forever."

England's character is the youngest of the four "wild boys" and becomes a bushranger to clear his name.

"She's always trying to stick up for him and when he gets into trouble she's fighting on his behalf," said Hutchison.

"She becomes a bit of an investigator and starts investigating these things that go wrong."

Wearing long, full skirts and highcollared shirts is a far cry from the barely there attire Hutchison donned as Alison Dine in Underbelly.

"There are some days where I'm lucky if my nose shows on Wild Boys," she joked.

"I'm very lucky. Because I'm playing the mayor's daughter I get absolutely beautiful outfits."

Hutchison went straight from shooting Joss Whedon's upcoming thriller Cabin in the Woods in Vancouver, Canada, to the Wild Boys' set outside of Sydney.
