Aged widow forced to unblock her own drains
WIDGEE widow Betty Williams had a swift response from Mayor Ron Dyne yesterday, when he learnt the 76-year-old had been forced to unblock the council drains in front of her home herself on Thursday night.
An angry Betty said yesterday council gangs had cleared out drains further up the road from her low-set home near the rodeo grounds in Widgee recently but not hers - despite repeated requests.
"They just thumb their nose at you," she said of the council employees she spoke to on the phone.
On Thursday, at the end of three days of rain that dumped between 140 and 160mm of rain in Widgee, Mrs Williams' side veranda and garage were awash.
She blames the construction of a bike path at the front of her house, which she says has somehow made the drainage situation worse.
On Thursday night, she said she was forced to take a rake and a chipping hoe and unblock the drain, so the water could get away.
"It's not good enough for me to be bloody outside cleaning out drains at night," she said.
"I am just sick and tired of it. It's just total neglect. What do we pay our rates for?"
Mrs Williams estimated it had been a good decade since the drains were last cleared by the council.
Councillor Dyne visited her property yesterday afternoon to inspect the situation.
