Mr Tuanakota said he mistook the creature for a stranded boat.

The Jakarta Globe reports it's believed the 15-metre long creature is a giant squid.

But a co-ordinator of Indonesia's Marine and Coastal Resources Management said it was likely to be a whale, Storyful reports.

Lab tests are underway to confirm the species, the co-ordinator said.
