The Daily Mercury caught up with a few school leavers as they were celebrating the end of their school days at the traditional "in uniform" beach splash at Mackay Harbour Beach yesterday.

Despite the excitement, Mackay North State High School graduates Asia Rodgers and her friends had their heads screwed on when it came to safety during end-of-school celebrations.

Asia said safety was the most important thing.

"We want to have a good time," she said.

"We don't want to sacrifice having a good time by paying for it the next day.

"The most important thing is to have common sense, make sensible decisions and look after each other."

The aspiring dancer will travel to Airlie Beach with a group of 13 friends.

They've been planning the trip for months.

Asia said her parents didn't have to be worried.

"We just want to relax and come back home safely," she said.

When Asia returns after the five-day celebration, she will not stay in Mackay for long.

The Year 12 graduate has enrolled at one of the Gold Coast's premier dance schools, IKIN dance.

"Professional dancing is what I really want to do," Asia said.

"I've been working towards this goal for a long time."

Asia said Year 12 had been difficult at times but completing school was worth it in the end.

"I am celebrating all the sleepless nights trying to finish assignments," she said.

"Overall, Year 12 was just an amazing year."
