'Way over the top': Gallen happy Bird deal is done

PAUL Gallen says he's glad the media focus on outgoing Cronulla teammate Jack Bird is over.

A member of last year's Sharks premiership team alongside Gallen, Bird last week signed a three-year deal to join Brisbane, ending speculation about his future.

Bird will play out the rest of the season with the premiers before linking with the Broncos.

"I'm just glad it's over. At the end of the day, the media attention this bought on Jack and our club is just way over the top," Sharks skipper Gallen told Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday.

"I mean, we're talking about a 22-year-old centre who's played one Origin game.

"We're not talking about Johnathan Thurston or Cooper Cronk.

"So, I'm glad it's over for everyone and we can all move on and Jack can concentrate on playing good footy for the rest of the year."

The Sydney Roosters, meanwhile, have backed teenager Latrell Mitchell to bounce back after he was dropped for last Friday's clash with Newcastle.

The 19-year-old was sent home to Taree to regroup, but is expected to be back in the line-up for the Anzac Day blockbuster with St George Illawarra.

"It's a rollercoaster," teammate Aidan Guerra said.

"It's a tough sport whether you've been in it for 10 years or whether you've been in it for two years.

"Everything's new to you when you're young. It's all a learning curve and sometimes there's ups and sometimes there's downs.

"We hope this little down moment for Latrell sparks something and everyone sees his potential."
