Sunday storm produces waterspout off Fraser Coast

A WATERSPOUT put on a quick and lively show for River Heads residents on Sunday afternoon, moving back and forth over the channel.

Residents said the silent water twister lasted for less than five minutes before it vanished.

"It was moving really quickly, I was having quite a time trying to take a photo of it," one resident said.

"I think it stopped because it ran out of water - it was at low tide."

The woman said she phoned her dad to tell him what she could see from their home balcony.

"Dad said, If it gets any closer get in the car and get out of there," she said. "But it wasn't exactly scary.

"It looked just like a tornado out on the water."

Another River Heads resident, Kelly Hanson, was on her back deck having a late lunch at 2pm when she saw the waterspout.

"It was a bit freakish," she said. "It's the first time I've seen one in 10 years... we've lived here in River Heads for 10 years."

To add to the recent rain, thunder and lighting, there were also reports of pea-sized hail stones near Susan River yesterday.

More wild weather is on the cards for the Fraser Coast.

Weatherzone meteorologist Melissa MacKellar said the week ahead would see rain and thunderstorms increasing as a trough deepened.

"On Monday, we can expect heavy morning showers to ease during the day," Ms MacKellar said.

"On Tuesday, isolated showers will take the coastal fringe."

Wednesday would bring a mostly sunny day as the trough contracted, before another trough arrived over Queensland on Thursday, lasting into the weekend.
