Warrego Hwy lit up with brighter lights for safety

LIGHTING on the Warrego Hwy will be brighter at three intersection as the State Government expands its Street Light Upgrade Program in the region.

Acting Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Steven Miles announced $510,000 worth of new LED lights will be installed this year, including around Toowoomba and two locations in south-west Queensland.

The LED bulbs will replace existing high pressure sodium luminary lights at the intersections of the Warrego Hwy and Helidon Rd, Tabletop Rd and Roaches Rd.

"These new lights are a cost-saving enhancement, delivering energy and maintenance savings," Mr Miles said.

"A projected cost saving of 40 per cent will be realised following the upgrades, as LED lights will only need to be changed every 15 years, rather than every three years.

"Road safety will be improved at upgraded roads because the white light of LED bulks enhance line markings and other road features."

The program was started at seven sites in and around Goondiwindi and Moonie townships, with locations chosen where existing lights had reached the end of their 25 year lifespan, Mr Miles said.

The Street Lighting Upgrade Program is worth $7.6 million.
