Diver frees manta ray tangled in rope

VIDEO: Qld diver attempts to save manta ray from rope

A QUEENSLAND diving firm has posted an incredible video showing a diver attempting to free an enormous manta ray from a tangle of rope caught around part of its head.

In the video, the diver can be seen gently cutting away chunks of rope picked up by the ray, forcing it to drag around a buoy and chunk of rock.

A company spokesman from Wolf Rock Dive described it on Facebook as "one of my saddest days diving at Wolf Rock", a popular destination off Rainbow Beach.

The threads had torn into the flesh of the ray, leaving its part of its mandible "50% severed".

"The rope had a buoy attached to one end which then led down to a piece of coffee rock.

"This poor manta ray has been swimming around with this and finally ended up at Wolf Rock where it had stopped to rest in a bit of the current."

After the diver cut away what they could, the ray disappeared into the deep blue -- with rope still embedded in its body.
