A NEW video released by the Department of Transport and Main Roads shows the stark difference between the Toowoomba Range and the new bypass.

Work is under way on the $1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing, with the latest announcement being construction works on the Mort St connection road.

In the new footage, viewers are taken on a one minute tour of the current Toowoomba Range road on the Warrego Highway and the new bypass.

Speeded up footage of a vehicle's ascent up the Range is shown, including the slow journey up to Toowoomba.

Worsening traffic is then shown on James St, including the 18 sets of lights that vehicles must pass through on their way through the city.

The department's video then shows an artist's impression of the new bypass, promising motorists that they will save 40 minutes on the new road.

The bypass will have no traffic lights and take heavy freight out of Toowoomba.

The department says it will make travel safer and more efficient.

The new video also shows in detail the New England Hwy bridge and the Mort St connection.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
