Veteran ready to muscle up

HE'S the veteran champion of Australia Strongest Man Titles.

Derek Boyer, 41, is well known to the people of Lismore and also Australia after starring on television show Gladiators and breaking world stone lifting records at Oakes Oval.

But his record of 13 straight Australia Strongest Man Titles will be put to the test this weekend.

Eight bulging musclemen from around the country will contest the heavyweight division with Brisbane's Eben Leroux, a three-time runner-up, gunning for his first victory.

Rampaging 21-year-old Daniel Macri, from Western Australia, is also a major threat to Boyer.

Adding extra incentive to the strong men is that whoever wins the Lismore event will be given direct qualification for the World's Strongest Man Titles in the USA later in the year.

“In the past, athletes were compelled to travel overseas to compete in other countries to seek to win a berth in the world titles,” Aussiepower co-organiser BillLyndon said.

“It is fantastic news to learn that the winner of Australia's Strongest Man title in Lismore wins direct entry to this year's world event.

“This is a very big move for strongman down under as it recognises the effort and structure that has been established.”

For the first time, an under 105kg category will also be held.

“This will be a breeding ground for bringing guys through but also allow some guys who don't have the stature to compete in the heavyweight to have a go,” Lyndon said.

The crowd favourite is always the truck pull, which will be held in Keen St again.

The rest of the events will be held at the Italo Club. They include the giant frame carry, which measures grip strength; the arm over arm test which measures arm and back strength and endurance; the log lift which measures explosiveness; the car walk/yoke walk which measures hip and leg strength and endurance; throw for height, which measures explosiveness; the deadlift which measures back power and endurance; and the stone lifting which measures brute strength, back power and speed.
