Vandalism at the Leichhardt Tree

VANDALISM has struck one of Mackay’s most historic landmarks, the Leichhardt Tree at the Bluewater Quay.

Mackay Regional Council engineering services director Stuart Holley said police were notified about the damage to the River St tree, which was discovered earlier this week.

“The tree has suffered significant damage from what appears to be caused by slicing or hacking with a sharp object such as an axe,” Mr Holley said.

“If the tree continues to be vandalised and becomes any worse it will be effectively ring barked, which results in the death of wood tissues causing the tree to deteriorate.”

The tree was also a victim of vandalism in August 2004, when someone allegedly lit a fire at the base of its trunk to keep them warm while camping.

Anyone with information should call the council on 1300 622 529 or the Mackay police on 4968 3444.
