US wins Presidents Cup

CAPTAIN Fred Couples' United States golf team shrugged off their lack of local knowledge to retain the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne.

The Americans led from the start of the competition on Thursday and turned a 4-2 opening day lead into a comfortable victory in Sunday's singles matches.

Tiger Woods' 4 and 3 win over Australia's Aaron Baddeley proved the clincher, giving the US the total of 18 points needed to win, having started the day leading 13-9.

It was the seventh US win from nine editions of the biennial contest, with one tie and the only International team win coming 13 years ago at Royal Melbourne.

As the Australians in the International team struggled, the US - with 10 of their 12 team members ranking in the world top 22 - were simply too talented.
