Two climb from wreckage as flames engulf crashed car

A SPEEDING, dangerous driver's vehicle has gone up in flames overnight after a fiery crash on the Bruce Highway south of Sarina, police allege.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating after the incident occurred around 6.30pm.

According to QPS media, the situation unfolded after officers from the Road Policing Unit (RPU) were conducting speed enforcement southbound and detected an oncoming vehicle travelling at speed.

"Police activated their lights and attempted to intercept the vehicle, however the driver of the car switched off their headlights and allegedly failed to stop, driving away," police media say.

"A short time later, police observed smoke over a rise and upon arriving at the scene found a man and woman climbing up the side of a ditch away from a vehicle, which had crashed and caught fire."

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said when fire crews arrived at the scene, a large fire had broken out.

"The vehicle was well involved as well as an area of grass," the spokeswoman said.

"By 6.50pm the bulk of the fire had been put out and crews were dampening down edges.

"At 7.40pm, we got the call that the fire was out."

It is understood the Bruce Hwy was closed until the early hours of this morning due to the crash and fire.

A 23-year-old woman was treated at the scene of the crash for minor injuries before being transported to Mackay Hospital in a stable condition.

An 18-year-old man was not seriously injured and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Investigations are ongoing.
