Malcolm Turnbull faces challenge in regional Australia

VOTERS in regional Australia did not buy what Malcolm Turnbull was selling, the editor of one of Australia's key newspapers told the ABC's Q&A program on Monday night.

The Australian's editor in chief, Paul Kelly, said Mr Turnbull's positive election campaign had failed to "cut through" in regional areas.

"Now what was the result of Turnbull being positive? Well he didn't cut through. And he didn't cut through in the areas in trouble: in Tasmania, in northern Queensland, in regional Queensland - where there's a lot of economic transition - in Western Sydney, where there's a lot of economic pressure, and in South Australia," he said.
