Turkey declares three days of mourning

TURKEY has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of the Ataturk airport suicide attack.

Three attackers killed 42 people and wounded about 250 at Europe's third busiest airport, early on Wednesday morning Australian time.

Forty-one people remained in intensive care yesterday.

American CIA director John Brennan said the attack in Istanbul bore the "hallmarks" of Islamic State - but the group had not claimed responsibility for it.

Turkish investigators have been examining airport CCTV footage, mobile phone recordings and witness statements to determine the attackers' identities.

Two gunmen shot passengers in the airport before detonating suicide vests.

A third attacker blew her/himself up in a carpark.

Social media footage showed a police officer shooting an attacker and escaping the area before the man blew himself up.

News agencies reported that 13 of those killed were foreigners - five Saudis, two Iraqis and citizens from China, Jordan, Iran, Tunisia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
