'Extreme reaction': Gladstone woman attacks trolley man

A YOUNG woman, who accused a shopper of deliberately pushing two trolleys into her, got mad, screaming, overturning cafe chairs.

The volatile reaction of 21-year-old Courtney Rose Smith was called 'completely disproportionate' by Gladstone magistrate Penelope Hay.

Smith was at Gladstone Central shopping centre at 12.40pm on February 20 when police prosecutor Sgt Barry Stevens said she was accidentally struck by a man pushing trolleys.

She said she attacked a trolley man and pushed him into tables and chairs, police said.

Sgt Stevens said Smith screamed at the man and threw cafe chairs and a table to the ground causing crockery to smash onto the ground.

"When police arrived she says a shopping trolley was pushed into her," he said.

"She says she attacked him, pushed him into chairs and tables as she assumed it was a deliberate act."

Sgt Stevens said Smith had priors for public nuisance. Smith pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to causing public nuisance at 12.40pm on February 20.

Lawyer Jun Pepito said Smith suffers anxiety and did not take her Valium that day.

"Your reaction was completely disproportionate, a very extreme reaction," Ms Hay said. Smith was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid community service work.
