Tragedy for family as baby dies during a day at the show

THE final day of the Bundaberg Show ended in tragedy for a family after the sudden death of their tiny four-month-old baby.

The mum had been breastfeeding her child outside the main show pavilion, shortly after 11.30am today, when she noticed something was terribly wrong with her son.

"We were in our stall and this lady came running in screaming, 'my baby, my baby'," witness Paul Jacobsen said.
"She came running in screaming, with the baby in her arms.

"We noticed the baby was very pale and was not breathing."

A Royal Flying Doctor nurse immediately came forward and began performing CPR on the gravely sick baby.

"I immediately called 000," Mr Jacobsen said.

He said a team of St John's Ambulance officers arrived on scene shortly after.

"They did a tremendous job," he said.

"They had four people working on him in seconds."

Bundaberg Police Detective Sergeant Andrew Self said the child was pronounced dead at Bundaberg Hospital at 12.23pm.

"It's being treated as a sudden, unexplained infant death," he said.

"It was a tragic day out at the show for the family."

Det Sgt Self said the infant's death was not being treated as suspicious but the Child Protection Investigation Unit was investigating.
