Traffic grinds to a halt at the gateway to the Bruce Hwy

A DIVERSION north of Brisbane caused heavy delays for northbound traffic this afternoon. It comes after a fatal crash in the state's far north and several people being taken to hospital after crashes in the southeast.

The diversion came after a crash on the Houghton Highway at Brighton.

The crash happened about 1pm, with gridlocked traffic to follow after two lanes were blocked.

The crash site was cleared by 3pm. Heavy delays remained on the Bruce Highway from Murrumba Downs back to the Gympie-Arterial Rd at Carseldine, and the Gateway Motorway from Bald Hills back to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

While those delays cleared, a crash on the Gympie-Arterial Rd northbound at Bald Hills and another on the Gateway Motorway at Nudgee northbound caused heavy delays. The M3 was backed up to Carseldine, while the Gateway Motorway was heavy from Nudgee back to Eagle Farm.

It came after a person died when two cars collided south of Cairns.

Emergency services were called a two-vehicle crash on Catherine St, Malanda, shortly after 10am this morning.

The driver of one vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 40-year-old female driver of the second car sustained minor injuries and was taken to Atherton Hospital in a stable condition.

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area as Catherine St will be closed for some time.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are currently travelling to the scene.

In the state's south, one person has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after a motorbike and vehicle crash at Cornubia.

The crash happened about 11.30am near the corner of Logandale Bvd and Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd.

Also in the southeast, a man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after a bike and car collided at Buderim just after 11.30am.
