Firefighters reinforce containment lines in Tuan overnight

UPDATE: Firefighters reinforced containment lines overnight and will continue to monitor the forest fire burning in Tuan throughout Monday.

A Department of Community Safety representative said although the fire had been contained, smoke might still be seen in the Tuan area and motorists were advised to drive to conditions.

People with respiratory conditions should also take the necessary precautions and keep windows and doors shut.

EARLIER: More than 1300 hectares of bushland has burned in Tuan Forest, south of Maryborough, with quick back-burning efforts from firefighters saving the Tuan township from the loss of lives and property.

Incident controller Brian Dale said the fire started north of Boonooroo Rd about 11am on Saturday.

Despite early efforts to control the grassfire, it quickly spread through Tuan Forest and burnt through pine trees worth millions of dollars.

Two helicopters, fire trucks, bulldozers and graders were used to fight the fire, along with 70 firefighters.

Mr Dale said the backburning carried out around the Tuan township undoubtedly saved property.

On Sunday, the fire was still burning and firefighters were still battling spot fires near the Cooloola Coast Rd.

Mr Dale said it was unclear what had started the blaze but there would be an investigation.
