Tourists offered unlimited ride on public transport

TOURISTS to the Sunshine State have been provided a new transport option - but it may cost them more than the activity they are trying to attend.

The SEEQ Go Card will allow visitors to buy a pre-paid pass that gives them unlimited travel on public transport networks in south-east Queensland.

A three-day consecutive adult SEEQ card will cost $79 or $129 for five days.

For children, three-day cards are $40 or $65 for five days.

For a family of four holidaying in the south-east corner the out-of-pocket expense will be $388.

Tourists will also have the option to use a normal Go Card and top it up as they go.

In comparison to tourism activities in the region, a 12-month pass to Wet N' Wild, Movieworld and Seaworld is $99 for an adult and a learn-to-surf lesson in Coolangatta is about $45.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council chief executive Daniel Gschwind concedes establishing a price point is a difficulty but believes the Go Card is a good start.

Mr Gschwind said consideration needed to be given to how much transport should be subsidised and how much tax payers should be expected to fork out.

"I think it is a good start and a good initiative for Translink to put on the table," he said.

"We have strongly advocated there should a public transport product with visitors in mind so they don't have to familiarise themselves with complicated pricing and ticket information."

Main Roads and Transport Minister Scott Emerson said the card also included discounts to major tourist attractions, restaurants and hotels and two Airtrain trips, which usually set an adult back $31.

"This is yet another part of our push to get people back on to public transport, particularly during the Christmas holiday period," Mr Emerson said.

"Tourists now have the option of a regular pay-as-you-travel go card with tourist information packs or they can plan ahead with the new pay-up-front unlimited travel SEEQ go card."

The SEEQ go card will be available for purchase at various locations across Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast including the Brisbane International and Domestic Airports and Queensland Rail CBD stations and can be pre-purchased through the TransLink website.
