Tourists help catch Coast rental car thief

AFTER stealing his friend's rental car, a Coast man was busted when he passed out in the front seat for all to see.

On January 17, Timothy Robin Bygrave, 43, was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry through Moffat Beach when his passenger - and renter of the car - got out as he wasn't happy with his manner of driving.

But, Bygrave never returned the car.

Days later, a couple holidaying at Dicky Beach saw the car with its lights and wipers on and a false plate attached sitting in a carpark.

When they went to have a look, they saw Bygrave unconscious in the front and called the police.

He ran away before police got there, but was found two days later while he was skateboarding.

Bygrave yesterday pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court to unlawful possession of a vehicle and two counts of stealing.

He was caught stealing food items from an IGA and Woolworths on two separate occasions with one haul costing over $100.

Magistrate John Parker, who said Bygrave had "lived a life of crime since 1993", sentenced him to a head sentence of six months' imprisonment with a parole release date on March 29.
