THE Illawong Hotel in Evans Head has introduced topless waitresses on Friday nights between 5pm and 9pm and the town has been "busting" with plenty of rumours.
Publican and owner Peter "Pencil" O'Connor said the reason the "lingerie ladies" were now serving drinks to hotel patrons after a busy week was to provide another form of entertainment in town.
"It was totally a business decision and it's been a very successful one," Mr O'Connor said.
"Evans Head needs a bit of 'oomph' in town."
Having introduced the ladies in August, Mr O'Connor admitted to having felt very nervous with hisdecision.
"The first night Sharon (Bass, partner) and I were very shaky as we didn't want it to come across as smutty," he said.
"Now we can see it's good forpatrons as they can sit at their tables and be served by the ladies."
Restrictions on this form of entertainment were strict, he said.
"According to the NSW Office of Liquor, Gambling and Racing there is to be no audience participation and nothing visible from the streets.
"We have also put a sign in Park St advising that no children are permitted in the licensed area between 5pm-9pm."
Most of the girls were from the Gold Coast area and had RSA quali- fications, Mr O'Connor said.
"I've been a publican for 34 years and said I would never have security, cameras or lingerie girls.
"I'm three strikes and out, but it is 2011 and it's a sign of the times."
A quick survey of Evans Head residents by the Rivertown Times didn't find much support for Mr O'Connor's new initiative, with some believing the novelty of the waitresses would soon fade.
Others were more direct in their opinions saying it was disgusting and demoralising with limited scope.
