Titan backs CQ bid

THE Central Queensland NRL Bid has found more high-profile support, this time from Titans coach John Cartwright.

Cartwright made an overnight stop in Gladstone this week to help foundation member Lance Backer of Ocean Tyres.

With the Titans only recently entering the NRL competition the bid for new clubs is still a fresh memory.

Cartwright said there was a place for new teams in the competition so long as enough consideration was given to the security of existing clubs.

"Central Queensland is perfect for another team," Cartwright said.

"It is lopsided the number of teams in Sydney.

"I don't think you would see any other sports encroaching on it. You would have a good hold in the area," he said.

Following the furore surrounding the proposal of an Ipswich team Cartwright said a CQ team should come first.

"I think probably learning from Sydney - don't get me wrong I'm all for tradition and I'd hate to see any of those clubs go by the wayside - but moving forward we have to be careful about putting clubs in each other's pockets," he said.

"Having said that they (Ipswich) have enough support.

"Some time down the line they will probably get the opportunity for a team in that corner."

With the need for two additional teams to enter the NRL Cartwright said a Perth team could be beneficial for the game.

"It makes a lot of sense for the spread of the game and pay TV," he said.

"We want the game to spread and prosper and for people in Western Australia to appreciate the game like we do.

"It has got to be managed and handled so we (existing teams) don't lose any support along the way."
