Three police injured as tasers fail to stop rampaging man

THREE police officers have been injured while attempting to arrest a man driving an allegedly stolen vehicle.

When police confronted the man on Wednesday afternoon in Richlands, he responded in an "extremely agitated, aggressive and irrational" way, and struggled violently.

Even the pepper spray and tasers used during the altercation had "little or minimal effect".

At 4.35pm, police patrols observed the vehicle in the carpark of a fast food outlet on Government Road.

It will be alleged when police attempted to speak to the male driver he became combative and violent towards the officers.

A prolonged struggle ensued during which time police were punched, kicked and assaulted by a man who displayed inordinate strength.

Additional police resources arrived and officers were finally able to restrain and handcuff the man.

The man received what are believed to be superficial injuries to his face and arm. It will be further alleged that during transportation to hospital he damaged medical equipment.

A 26-year-old Wacol man has been charged with 18 offences including four counts of serious assault police, three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts each of disqualified and unlicensed driving and one count each of wilful damage, enter premises and commit an indictable offence, burglary and commit an indictable offence, receiving stolen property, dishonestly making off without paying and failing to stop.

He has been denied police bail and is due to appear in the Richlands Magistrates Court on Thursday morning .

A 35-year-old Sunnybank Hills woman, a passenger in the car, has been issued with a Notice to Appear in the same court on October 5 charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and enter premises and commit an indictable offence.

The three officers injured sustained bruising and abrasions, two of whom required first aid treatment.
