'This is Gladstone, not America': Mob bash men twice
HAMMERS, knives and axe handles were reportedly used on three victims in two home invasions at the same property in Rollo St Gladstone on Friday and Sunday night.
Three New Zealand men are now in the Gladstone watch house charged with assault while armed in company as a result of the invasions and could face deportation.
A father and his two sons were allegedly attacked by up to six men in their home on Friday night where one was hit in the back of the head with a hammer.
The dispute may have been over a stolen motorcycle and left the victims with a broken arm, a number of contusions to the head and a broken eye socket between them, but Gladstone Police Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant said the men could have easily died.
"There were numerous threats that if money was not returned with the bike that they would return and in this case they have followed through with the threat two days later," he said.
"On Sunday morning we took into custody a 37-year-old male and charged him in regards to assault while armed in company.
"Then 8pm last night police were called to the same address with males and a few extras returning."
Police arrested the five men, two were charged with assault while armed in company and three with minor weapons offences.
Police are working with Department of Immigration to see if the three men charged are Australian citizens and if they are not they could be deported.
They are due to appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court today along with the man charged with the stabbing of a man in Benaraby on Friday morning.
Det Snr Sgt Peachey said it was a testing weekend for police with two stabbings on Friday morning, a home invasion on Friday night and another on Sunday night.
"It was one of those weekends I haven't seen in my four years here in Gladstone," he said.
"Gladstone community and Gladstone Police won't stand for this violence.
"This is Gladstone, not America, with people found using weapons we will come down on you with all the powers we have."
