Three asylum seeker boats intercepted

ANOTHER 80 asylum seekers were intercepted on three boats north of Cocos Islands on Tuesday.

The boats were first detected by a RAAF maritime patrol aircraft under the control of the Border Protection Command.

Some 36 passengers and five crew were on the first boat, with 37 people on the second and 17 passengers and one crew on board the third.

All those intercepted were transferred to Cocos Islands for initial health and security checks before being transferred to Christmas Island.
