Break-in shatters widowed woman's haven

WIDOWED woman Andy Ruth was in shock after her West Gladstone unit was robbed on Friday night.

Ms Ruth, who has a disability, returned home to find her ground floor unit security doors had been jemmied and the top locks busted wide open.

"I came inside and found my medication (oxycodone/ morphine) stolen along with cash, tobacco and my jewellery," she said.

"The place was trashed, but the worrying part is that I still can't find my spare key.

"I'd just hate to think what would've happened if I'd walked in and they were still there."

Ms Ruth said she could only put the robbery down to her vulnerability.

"I've never had a problem before, but maybe I've spoken to the wrong person about my medication, or maybe someone has been watching me hobble to and fro from my car," she said.

Ms Ruth was just one of four women who live in a block of 20 near the PCYC, which makes her nervous.

"This little unit, although it isn't much - this used to be my security, my haven," she said.

But Ms Ruth said she wouldn't let the robbery stop her from enjoying her home.

"I've spent the weekend with my family which has eased me," she said.

"It will be a few weeks until I feel confident again but I'm just angry at the moment and I refuse to be frightened in my own home.

"A motto I have always lived by is, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'."
