Thief bogged in dam

IN what appears to be a case of bad luck for an accused thief, a four-wheel drive reportedly carrying stolen goods was found bogged in a dam on a Booral property yesterday.

Neighbours of the Shore Road East property told the Chronicle a woman had knocked on their door on Monday night claiming she was considering buying land in the area and had accidentally backed her car into water.

Yesterday morning police were called to the fish hatchery where they found the four-wheel drive on its side, partly submerged in the dam.

The owner did not wish to be interviewed but it is believed items belonging to the property were found in the car.

Yesterday morning a 49-year-old woman from Scarness was taken to the Hervey Bay station for questioning.

A police spokesman confirmed last night the woman had subsequently been arrested in relation to the dam incident and had been charged with stealing.

She was later released and given a notice to appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court next month.

Police are still investigating the events that led to the woman allegedly entering the hatchery land and taking property.

At the time of going to press the four-wheel drive vehicle had yet to be recovered.
