'The year is young and full of promise'

SURFING: He may have started his world title campaign in unimpressive fashion but Julian Wilson still has plenty of optimism heading into the second event on this year's Championship Tour.

The Peregian Beach 28-year-old finished a relatively lowly 13th at the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks a fortnight ago but has been in in a buoyant mood in Western Australia this week.

"The year is young and full of promise. Time to continue the hard work and apply some winning,” he said on social media. "Pretty happy to be back in the west.”

The Margaret River Pro is due to get under-way on Wednesday, with Wilson scheduled to collide with compatriots Josh Kerr and Bede Durbidge in a non-elimination round one heat.

A relaxed Wilson took to the renowned and challenging waves there on Monday and said the session "was a bit of fun”.

Touted a world title contender since claiming the world tour rookie-of-the-year tag in 2011, Wilson has won the prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing and three events on the elite circuit, including the marquee Pipe Masters. But he hasn't finished higher than sixth on the year-end rankings. He was eighth last season.

Fellow Sunshine Coaster Keely Andrew is set to compete in round one of the women's event at Margaret River.
