THE votes have been counted and the People's Choice award for Most Inspirational Sportsperson from the Darling Downs has been awarded to champion cyclist Jared Graves.

Cobb+Co Museum Director Deborah Bailey said a display of memorabilia from Graves' very impressive career had been included in the Red Dirt + Grass Stains exhibition and would be on display until December 2014.

"Jared has competed at the highest international levels in a range of bike disciplines, including BMX, Four Cross, Downhill, Cross Country, Cross Country Eliminator and Enduro.

"He is currently leading the Enduro World Series after six International races and we will all be cheering for him when he competes in the deciding race in Ligure, Italy on 4 and 5 October.

Graves is in great company in the Red Dirt + Grass Stains exhibition, which also includes IndyCar champion Will Power, Olympic gold medallist Glynis Nunn-Cearns and cricketer Greg Ritchie.

"The red dirt of Toowoomba, along with the inevitable grass stains, was the scourge of every parent who ever had a child play sport in Toowoomba. It has also proved very fertile - growing champions in so many sports," Ms Bailey said.

"We knew when we began work on this exhibition there would be a wealth of people to choose from but as we delved and talked further we were absolutely daunted by the number and range of sportspeople who have made Toowoomba proud."

Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts, Ian Walker, applauded the choice of Jared as the region's Most Inspirational Sportsperson.

"Over the years Toowoomba has been home to many of our nation's sporting greats and it's great to see this tradition celebrated through the museum's Red Dirt and Grass Stains exhibition," Mr Walker said.

The Red Dirt + Grass Stains exhibition will be on display at Cobb+Co Museum until December 2014.
