Fragile cargo: Ten zebra fly into Coolangatta airport

UPDATE Tuesday, January 28: THE 10 Zebras have arrived safely at Darling Downs Zoo.

But for some of them the journey is not over.

Zoo director Stephanie Robinson said they would spend three weeks in quarantine before five of the zebras would depart again for zoos in other states.

AN airport is the last place you would expect to find a cohort of zebra.

But that's exactly the special cargo that was welcomed at Gold Coast Airport this week.

Ten zebra foals, aged under two years, came in via a Scoot Airlines flight on Monday.

An inside source told the Daily News the animals all needed to be checked out by a qualified vet, as well as have their passports stamped before they were cleared to continue on with their journey.

The flight came from Dallas Texas in the United States and before that the zebra flew from Europe, so there were a few tired eyes peeping out of the holes in their crates as the group trundled up the M1 towards their final stop.

Rumour has it the foals are headed by truck to a zoo west of Brisbane but we could not confirm the exact location of their new home.

The cargo hold on the Boeing 777 aircraft they travelled in was temperature-controlled.
