Teenager sent to jail for armed robbery

A BUNDABERG teenager will spend just three months behind bars for his role in the armed robbery of an 87-year-old Kepnock Grove Retirement Village resident.

Christopher James Bell and co-offender Mathew Stewart Maughan broke into a Bourbong St army disposal store on December 2 last year.

The pair stole replica guns and extendable batons which they then brandished after knocking on the elderly man's door in the early hours of December 3.

They demanded his wallet and car keys, before driving off in his car. Judge Gary Long told the court it was accepted that Bell's offending was less culpable than that of his co-offender and that it was Maughan who had pointed the replica gun at the retirement village resident and demanded his wallet and car keys.

But he said Bell had still conspired with Maughan in the "selection of the target" and actively supported Maughan by being physically present and following him into the man's unit.

Judge Long said it appeared from this case and from Bell's criminal history that Bell had a tendency to be led into serious antisocial behaviour by others.

"You are not before the court as a youthful first offender," he told Bell.

Judge Long said it was therefore necessary to impose a period of imprisonment to make it clear to Bell that such behaviour was unacceptable.

Bell was sentenced to two years for armed robbery and burglary, eight months for break and entry and stealing and four months for unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He will be due for parole on January 27 next year.
