Suspended jail sentence for crotch-grabbing trolley hurler

A MAN who grabbed a woman's crotch, hurled a shopping trolley at another woman and smashed a man's cheek and eye socket has been sentenced to 12 months in prison.

But because of his previous good character, lack of criminal history and show of remorse through paying compensation to his victims, Cameron Nathan Chant's prison sentence was immediately suspended for 30 months.

Chant, 25, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to sexually assaulting one woman and physically assaulting another woman and a man in an ecstasy- and alcohol-fuelled attack in the early hours of August 7 at Maroochydore.

Yesterday, after Chant handed over compensation cheques for his victims adding up to $5300, and letters of apology, Magistrate Rod Madsen handed down the sentence and ordered him to do 80 hours of community service.

"Clearly it's very important that victims of crimes should be compensated for their injuries, and for them ... any level of compensation to some extent may be a way of restoring to them what they've lost," he said.
