IT POSED a striking image as it inched above the horizon to the south-east.

Photographers around the Sunshine Coast made the most of the supermoon, pairing the exciting phenomenon with the Coast's stunning landscapes.

But capturing the perfect landscape with the supermoon is trickier than it might at first seem, as photographer Todd Brewer explained.

"Capturing the supermoon, or any moon probably (with detail), requires a decent telephoto lens (zoom lens) to get the focal length required to capture the shots that give you the moon's pattern and not just a shiny glow," he said.

"My image is a two-shot blend; the first shot taken with a telephoto lens. The light trails on bridge and background was a separate shot; I used a 30-second exposure for whisper light trails of a local bus and couple of cars and to capture the colours in the sky from sunset which was happening behind me.

"You really cannot achieve all this in a single shot, so creative imagination is a great thing. (It) gives a different feel/look."

 


TODD'S TIPS

  • If you're serious about it, do the homework on when the moon rises, sets etc.
  • Capture it as part of an interesting composition. It really makes the shot rather than just the moon itself.
  • The weather is always a challenge. Sometimes it works in your favour, other times not.
  • Really get to know your camera as the settings you use are really important.
  • At the moment take long sleeve top and pants as the mosquitoes are crazy out.
  • Most of all, enjoy your experience and learn from your shots.


WHAT IS A SUPERMOON

A SUPERMOON is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.

The result is the largest apparent size of the Moon as seen from Earth.

Technically it's called a perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system.
