GP Super Clinic inundated with 700 calls in first week

PATIENTS are being turned away from Gladstone's new GP Super Clinic just a month after the long-awaited medical facility opened its doors.

More than 700 calls were made to the busy service within the first week of opening - with more than 100 calls received per hour.

Practice director Dr John Bird said staff could not cope with them all, but patients were placed on a re-appointment system and could reserve future appointments if they couldn't squeeze in.

"The problem isn't seen just here, but all over town," Dr Bird said.

"But this isn't the case with allied heath care services like physiotherapy, radiology or pathology."

Dr Bird said the clinic was still accepting new patients.

The revelation comes as Queensland senator Mark Furner and senate candidate Chris Ketter toured the clinic on Friday morning.

Mr Furner visited the clinic on the advice of fellow practice director Dr Evan Jones.

Another politician is tipped to officially open the clinic on Wednesday.
