Schoolyard shock as 12-year-old allegedly stabs classmate

STUDENTS at a Caboolture school watched in horror as a 12-year-old girl allegedly stabbed a classmate in the neck during an altercation.

The girl has been charged with attempted murder and was expected to appear in the Children's Court yesterday.

Police allege the attack happened in a classroom at the high school, which can't be identified for legal reasons, about 9.15am on Monday.

They say the pair struggled and the victim suffered minor injuries to her neck and hands.

A member of staff allegedly intervened and disarmed the girl.

The Department of Education was not able to comment on the incident but parents of students who witnessed it said they were left traumatised.

"All the kids were very shaken. Luckily, the teacher managed to intervene," one mother said on Facebook.

"I know the school, as my daughter goes there and her friend was the victim," another woman said.

"It's the affect of this incident on the victim that really counts and how the school, Education Department and everyone can support her."

A police spokesperson said a youth could be charged with any crime that suited an offence, regardless of their age.

Very few charges differentiated between adults and juveniles.

The alleged incident shocked many people on social media.

"You do an adult crime then you are treated like an adult," wrote one.

"There is no fear in some of these young people.

"They know they will not have to pay the full price of their actions."

The alleged stabbing was one of three in Queensland schools in the past three weeks, after a 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy were stabbed in two separate incidents on the Gold Coast.

It is also the second incident to have occurred in Caboolture since 2012, when a 16-year-old stabbed a fellow student multiple times in a toilet block at St Columban's College.

Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestoppers.com.au.
