Striking sub-compact Mazda CX-3 due for 2015 launch

SPORTS utility vehicles are more than flavour of the month. So far this year, the SUV segment is growing despite a contracting sales market, and one of the expanding genres is the sub-compact.

Mazda is getting set to join the market with its CX-3, which was revealed this week.

Not so long along the Mitsubishi ASX cut a lonely figure. But over the past 18 months Australia has been besieged with new offerings. First came the Holden Trax, quickly followed by the Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke, Ford EcoSport and Suzuki S-Cross.

It's based on the recently launched Mazda2, measuring 4275mm long, 1765mm wide and sits 1550mm high, with the driver's eye-point at 1250mm.

Given those foundations, the interior look and feel comes as no surprise. The up-spec models will feature a head-up display and Mazda's MZD Connect system.

No pricing or specifications have been finalised for our market but, given where the competition sits, expect drive-away pricing around the $22,000 mark.
