'Mafia-style' riot involving up to 50 armed people in street
AS A Norman Gardens resident enjoyed an afternoon nap, a wild street brawl erupted just outside his front door.
A resident of Pfitzemater St, who wished to remain anonymous, couldn't believe it when he looked out the window and saw up to 50 people armed with shovels, sticks and pipes brawling in the street yesterday afternoon.
"I was woken up by what I thought was some kids playing in the street," the resident said.
"They were starting to get a bit loud so I looked out and there was anything up to 50 people getting into it in the street.
"They had shovels, sticks and poles. It was one of the worst things I've ever seen."
The resident said he called 000.
"I didn't want to witness murder," he said.
"It was mafia-style and went on for about 30 minutes.
"I called the police and when the people fighting heard the sirens they just scattered. They were jumping fences and running down the street.
"There were about 12 people left when the police pulled up and they were still arguing and carrying on."
Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Dean said at about 2pm yesterday police responded to reports of a street brawl on Pfitzemater St.
"There was a disturbance involving multiple people and multiple crews attended," Snr Sgt Dean said.
"The Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigating."
A 38-year-old woman was charged with two counts of common assault, a 23-year-old man was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, a 25-year-old woman was charged with public nuisance and a 25-year-old man was charged with common assault.
They will all appear in Rockhampton magistrates court on January 22.
A further six people are assisting police with investigations and further charges may be laid.
