Storm chasers warn tornado threat on Darling Downs
STORM CHASERS are warning of a significant severe storm threat today in Toowoomba and across the Darling Downs with the chance of tornadoes.
Higgins Storm Chasing's Jeff Higgins issued the warning on the group's Facebook page today.
Mr Higgins said a surface low centred over Charleville and Mitchell was generating a "very potent thunderstorm environment" over the south-east Darling Downs.
"We do expect large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning and severe thunderstorms," he said.
"This is dangerous stuff.
"We won't be surprised if there are reports of tornadoes.
"There is a definite threat."
Mr Higgins said Darling Downs residents could encounter winds of in excess of 125kmh, similar to those that wreaked havoc across the Somerset region overnight.
"That's what we saw at Fernvale," he said. "It blew roofs off, brought big trees down over cars, powerlines came down, people were displaced. People could have been killed" he said.
