Indoor shooting range fires up inner Toowoomba

TOOWOOMBA firearms store, the Open Range, is on target to change the perception of shooting as a sport.

The store has moved to its new purpose-built premises at 251 James St which is complete with its own 25m-long indoor shooting range.

The range is the only one of its kind in Queensland and Open Range co-owner Simon Wagner hopes it will give more people an insight into the sport of shooting.

"Gun shops have a reputation for being out-of-the-way, back-alley style retailers and we are determined to change that perception," he said.

"Bringing the store into a prime position in Toowoomba was another of our objectives.

"Hopefully, we can give people a chance to come in and give the sport of shooting a go in a safe and controlled environment."

While the range can be used by members of the public, Mr Wagner said everyone must follow strict safety guidelines and restrictions.

"Anyone can shoot as a part of our gallery with one-on-one supervision and under 100% controlled conditions," he said.

"Our packages start at $99 and include a supplied gun, rounds, supervision and safety induction.

"Use of the range is limited to only our supplied guns. We will be establishing our own club next year which will give licensed members the opportunity to bring in their own.

"We have six, full-time licensed staff who are always happy to help answer any questions."
