Donations needed for stem cells to restore Troy's sight
TWO weeks ago an article in The Observer told the story of Troy Wengel and his parents who were raising money to go to America for stem cell surgery. They hoped it would restore his eyesight.
In that short time Troy's GoFundMe page received more than $700 in donations, taking the total to $1475.
He needs $26,908 for the operation.
In 2011 Troy lost his eyesight after he crashed his motorbike on Kirkwood Rd at Gladstone.
After smashing into a metal barrier he was found lifeless the next morning and spent the next three months in a coma.
Troy's mum Irene had hoped to leave for America in February but she has hit a snag with the travel insurance.
"It only happened on Tuesday and I haven't got my head around it yet but basically it's to do with insurance," she said.
"Troy's unable to get travel insurance for his procedure until he gets clearance and in America if something goes wrong that could be very expensive."
Irene said the family was disappointed but understood why they needed to delay the trip.
