State wants drug trafficker to pay half a million bucks

A CONVICTED drug trafficker who was caught in a major police sting targeting drugs in Central Queensland mining towns has been ordered to explain how he has half a million dollars of unexplained wealth.

Jason Carl Klementsen has had his assets frozen, including two properties - one at Emerald and the other at The Gemfields - and a boat that was moored at Yeppoon.

The state has applied to Brisbane Supreme Court seeking an order to force Klementsen to pay $489,733 to the state.

Court documents have revealed that a police forensic analyst had examined Klementsen's bank accounts and assets found he had about half a million dollars to his name but it was not clear how he got it.

Klementsen has until November to file documents responding to the state government's application and the case will be heard at a later date.

Earlier this year Klementsen was sentenced to five years in jail, suspended after serving 18 months, for trafficking marijuana around Central Queensland and other drug charges.

He was caught in 2014 during police's Operation Lima Siege, which targeted people involved in drug activity throughout Central Queensland mining communities.

He was busted when he sold marijuana to undercover officers during the operation.

In 2014 the state government applied to the supreme court to freeze some of Klementsen's assets, including two properties, vehicles and a boat - a 17m full timber cruiser Ocean Sun that he bought in 2012 for about $100,000.

The court made the order in January last year to freeze these assets.

Court documents showed Klementsen was also the owner of a trucking business, Tilecrete Excavations Pty Ltd.

In a file before the court, Klementsen has listed all of his assets worth more than $5000 that included various vehicles he had owned including trucks, bobcats and trailers plus 13 cattle. He also detailed other vehicles he had owned as part of his business. - ARM NEWSDESK
