A MAN is fighting for life and a busy main road has been shut after a stabbing in inner-city Brisbane this morning.

The top of Milton Rd near Caxton St is currently blocked off as police investigate what sparked a stabbing in the middle of the road at 4am this morning.

Early reports suggest two men in their early 30s had been crossing Milton Rd when a car containing a man and woman pulled out of a nearby McDonalds.

For unknown reasons a physical altercation occurred and one of the pedestrians was stabbed.

"The driver's got out of the vehicle - there was a female in the vehicle as well - a physical altercation took place which has resulted in quite serious injuries to the victim," Inspector Daniel Bragg told Channel 9.

The man, in his early 30s, suffered stab wounds to his abdomen and back and was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious condition.

Milton Rd was closed in both directions leading onto Petrie Terrace.
