Somerset Regional Councillor Neil Zabel passes away

IT is with great sadness that Somerset Regional Council advises the passing of veteran Councillor Neil Zabel this afternoon.

Cr Zabel had a distinguished career in local government spanning two decades.

He served as chairman of the former Esk Shire Council and also held positions of Deputy Mayor for Somerset Regional Council and more recently Councillor.

A fortnight ago, Cr Zabel was recognised for reaching the 20 year milestone in local government.

Cr Zabel was one of only 1007 people in local government to have reached that milestone.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann worked alongside Cr Zabel for many years and said he was an enthusiastic Councillor who always held the needs of the community in high regard.

"Cr Zabel was very passionate about his community and always strived to do his best," Cr Lehmann said.

"He devoted twenty years to local government and was involved in various community organisations across the region.

"Cr Zabel will be missed as a Councillor but always remembered.

"Our thoughts and well wishes are with his wife Judy and family at this difficult time."
