FOOTBALL: Fringe Socceroo Jamie Maclaren has agreed to join Scottish Premier League outfit Hibernian on loan in a bid to keep his World Cup dreams alive.
The former Brisbane Roar striker has left German second-tier side Darmstadt after his selection bid for Russia 2018 stalled due to a lack of game time.
Maclaren, who had broken into the Socceroos squad at the end of the last A-League season, scored 40 goals in two seasons for the Roar but fell out of favour with Ange Postecoglou at the end of his reign as national team boss.
The clubs have not formally announced the deal but Darmstadt coach Dirk Schuster admitted Hibernian have secured Maclaren's services.
"I hope this turns out to be a good move for him and that he can draw attention to himself for the World Cup,” Schuster said.
"Hopefully he will help Australia in the summer and then come back to us a better player.”
Maclaren, who signed a three-year deal with Darmstadt in May, was not selected for Australia's World Cup qualifying playoffs against Syria and Honduras.
Hibernian are fourth in the Scottish premiership with nine wins from 22 matches.
