AS YEAR 12 students across Queensland ponder their options for next year, Ipswich's Steven Jeffries is already on his way to building a lifelong career in a field he loves.
The aspiring floorer and sander was the winner of the Construction Student of the Year Award at the 2011 Construction Skills Queensland Excellence Awards.
Steven begins a school-based flooring apprenticeship this month, with local company Fusion Floors.
He will spend two days a week working as a first-year apprentice, then commence as a second-year apprentice when he graduates from St Edmunds College.
Reflecting on his journey so far in construction, Steven said his Awards experience last year has provided him with new self-belief.
"To go through the nominations process and then win the award was a confidence boost. This gave me extra motivation to work harder," he said.
"It's great to be recognised and to have the respect of so many talented people in the industry," he said.
This year's awards will be held on Friday, November 9 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. For ticketing information, contact CSQ on 1800 798 488 or visit csq.org.au/awards.
